Archives: Richard III and Henry VIII pardons translated.

This week marks 521 years since a pardon was granted to the City of Wells by Richard III in 1484. Wells City Archives is very grateful to the Richard III Society Somerset Branch for arranging the translation of two pardons in the collection by Dr Shelagh Sneddon, and to the family of Hugh Warren who funded the translations in his memory. Both pardons are written in medieval Latin, and are beautiful to look at. They can however present challenges in understanding them and it is very exciting to receive these new translations shedding fresh light on these two items in the collection 500 years after they were originally written. The translations will be of great benefit to future researchers and are dedicated to Hugh Warren. For more information, a new display is now on show at Wells Town Hall.
