I am honoured and humbled to have been chosen as the 647th Mayor of Wells. And this also presents a unique opportunity.

An opportunity to make a difference and I want to raise at least £3,000 for the Wells branch of Macmillan Cancer Support. This charity is special for me because:

1. Macmillan rely almost entirely on public donations to provide its vital support to people with cancer but has suffered a huge drop in income as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.​

2. As many as 50,000 people in the UK are believed to have cancer which has not yet been diagnosed because of the disruption caused by Covid-19.

3. Members of my family have been lost to cancer.

4. All the money we raise will be spent locally.

Please help me to support Macmillan which was forced to announce in September plans to make 310 redundancies in response to an expected £175m loss in fundraising income by the end of 2022, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

These measures are designed to protect critical cancer services, such as Macmillan nurses and the Macmillan support phone line, which have been heavily impacted by coronavirus. The charity’s key focus will be helping to get cancer treatment and care back up and running.

As Macmillan’s income has dropped, they are seeing a significant increase in the need for their support.

“At a time when our huge loss in income is directly impacting those around us who are affected by cancer, we are grateful to Philip and his team for his support and help in ensuring that cancer does not become The Forgotten C.

“I look forward to working with him to raise as much money as possible for the people and communities of Somerset,” said Genevieve Drinkwater, senior fundraising manager for Macmillan.

“We feel privileged to have been selected as the charity for his mayoral term.”
