The Mayor, Councillor Jasmine Browne and her family climbed the 168 steps of the tower of St. Cuthbert’s Church on Sunday 24th August to see the amazing views of our beautiful city. The view from the top is a full 360 degree view of Wells and surrounding areas from the Mendips out to Weston, through Glastonbury Tor, and of Wells Cathedral itself.
Part way up the Mayor and other visitors from around the country stopped to hear about the bell ringing and then had a go on several of the bells!
St. Cuthbert’s is the parish and civic church for the City of Wells dating from the 13th century.
The Mayor was welcomed by Antonia Gwynn, Parish Administrator, who explained the story behind the remarkable and unique collection of late medieval painted sculptures (known as reredos) discovered in 1848 during restoration work. The collection is recognised as one of the most important groups of medieval sculpture in an English church today.
