600 years ago, in 1424, Bishop Bubwith established the Almshouses in Wells. The Mayor of Wells, Councillor Jasmine Browne attended a service in St Cuthbert's Church to celebrate and give thanks for six centuries of continuous support for poorer, vulnerable and less fortunate members of the community.
Voluntary Trustees from our community are responsible for maintaining and managing the buildings and overseeing the current renovation of the Chapel attached to the houses. It is a wonderful piece of Wells history which is still relevant today in that its mission has remained the same.
The Mayor is pictured here with HM Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff of Somerset, the Dean of Wells the Vicar of St. Cuthbert’s and former Lord Lieutenant, Annie Maw.
