    Bishop Bekynton

On Sunday 12th January the Mayor of Wells, Councillor Jasmine Browne and Wells City Councillors held a commemoration at the Conduit in the Market Square and attended a service at Wells Cathedral to give thanks for the benevolence of Bishop Thomas Bekynton, former Bishop of Bath and Wells.

Bishop Bekynton is remembered for his building of the gateways (Bishop's Eye, Penniless Porch, Chain Gate, and Brown's Gate) but above all for his grant of a conduit in 1451 bringing fresh water to the citizens of Wells.

The Mayor laid a posy of flowers on the altar of the Bekynton Chantry chapel and the Dean of Wells gave a symbolic offering of water.
